Your function

As part of its growth strategy, Ageas has expanded its reinsurance activities by opening its reinsurance activity to third-parties. The reinsurance activities are carried out by Ageas Re, which operates on the balance sheet of ageas SA/NV, the top holding company of the Group, which as a result became an operational reinsurance company. The legal counsel Reinsurance will provide legal advice and support to the fast growing reinsurance activity, which currently consist of 25+ dedicated professionals.

 Your role as a Legal Counsel Reinsurance is crucial in ensuring the integrity and transparency of Ageas Re. You will serve as a strategic business partner to Ageas Re and you will support the further growth of this business unit. You will work closely with the Ageas Re Management Committee and other stakeholders to provide expert legal advice and support the growth of the business, while ensuring compliance with legal regulations.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Providing spot-on, pragmatic and strategic legal advice to the Ageas Re leadership;

  • Act as a second line for specific questions of the underwriters when drafting, reviewing and negotiating reinsurance contracts;

  • Monitoring regulatory developments and advise on reinsurance matters to ensure compliance with a scope on both Belgium and the global marketplace;

  • Working with Ageas Re to identify legal risks;

  • Providing practical solutions to support the growth of the (new) business;

  • Assisting with the establishment and maintenance of policies and procedures to ensure the Ageas' reinsurance activities comply with legal regulations;

  • Assisting the Management Committee of Ageas Re as counsel and corporate secretary and identifying and flagging legal risks;

  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders as required (e.g. with the NBB)

You will be part of the Group legal team and will report to the Group Head of Legal. You will have a dotted line to the Ageas Re Director of Finance, Risk and Operations and will be embedded in Ageas Re. 

Your profile

  • You have obtained a (Belgian) Master in Law degree;

  • You have acquired a solid experience in a reputable law firm or with the in-house legal department of a significant player. An experience within a (re)insurance company is a big plus;

  • You are eager to learn about about insurance regulatory matters;

  • You have a strong working knowledge of English, French, Dutch, Spanish, German or Italian are a plus;

  • You have strong analytical legal skills and you are also pragmatic and able to translate your legal analysis into clear and crisp business relevant advice;

  • You are able to manage complex projects and legal risks, while delving into intricate legal matters;

  • You are able to function autonomously and to take on responsibilities;

  • You have a resilient mindset, who derives energy from learning and exposure;

  • You are a smart, mature and enthusiastic person;

  • You have clear and effective communication skills.
